Brotman Diversity Award winners named

Pacific Islander Partnerships in Education (PIPE) and the Center for Multicultural Education are being honored with the 2003 Jeff and Susan Brotman Diversity Award. The award is given to units that advance diversity in the UW community.

PIPE is a mentorship project designed to address the low retention and graduation rates of UW Pacific Islander students. It works through intensive mentoring sessions, close supervision of academic progress, referrals to resources needed, and facilitating group study sessions. Organized by one faculty member and several students, the project has had financial support from the Office of the Vice President for Minority Affairs and Office of the President.

The Center for Multicultural Education, part of the College of Education, is dedicated to research and practice related to equity issues, intergroup relations and the achievement of students of color. It brings prominent scholars to campus, recruits students of color for teaching and trains University and K-12 teachers to provide accessible educational experiences.

Candidates for the award were judged on their effectiveness, creativity, impact and potential. The winners will be honored along with other recipients of University-wide awards at the annual Recognition Ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, June 12 in Meany Hall. University Week will publish its annual awards supplement with information about all the winners on May 29.
