Klausner to present Nursing’s Soule Lecture

Dr. Richard Klausner, executive director for global health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will give the 24th annual Elizabeth Sterling Soule Lecture for the School of Nursing at 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 21, in room 130 of Kane Hall on campus. Dean Emeritus Sue Hegyvary will be the moderator. The event is free and open to the public. A reception in the Walker-Ames room will follow.

Klausner’s topic is “The Grand Challenges of Science and Technology in Global Health: Improving the Human Condition.”

His mandate at the Gates Foundation is to create successful national and international programs that expand access to health care and alleviate global health inequities. The Global Health Program’s overarching goal is to improve the human condition by applying new science and technology to prevent or eradicate HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and other avoidable diseases in developing countries.

Klausner, former director of the National Cancer Institute, is well known for his work in cell and molecular biology and earlier served as chief of the cell biology and metabolism branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from Duke University. After postgraduate medical training at Harvard, he began his research career at the National Institutes of Health.
