UW tops national primary care medical school, nursing school rankings

The University of Washington is No. 1 among primary care medical schools, and No. 1 among nursing schools in the new U.S. News & World Report annual rankings of graduate programs and professional schools.

In “America’s Best Graduate Schools” from U.S. News & World Report on newsstands April 7, 25 UW programs and specialties are among the top 10 in categories ranked for the first time or reranked this year. Numerous other UW master and doctoral programs have been ranked in previous years and are in the book.

The rankings are based on surveys conducted this year and last.

This is the tenth straight year that the School of Medicine has been named the top primary-care medical school. Academic specialties reranked at the medical school were:

  • Family medicine–1st

  • Rural Medicine–1st

  • AIDS–5th

  • Women’s health–5th

  • Biomedical (joint program with engineering) — 5th

  • Pediatrics–6th

  • Geriatrics–6th

  • Internal medicine–6th

The School of Nursing has been top ranked since 1984. Academic specialties reranked in nursing were:

  • Clinical nurse specialist: adult/medical-surgical–1st

  • Psychiatric/mental health–1st

  • Community/public health–1st

  • Family nurse practitioner–2nd

  • Adult nurse practitioner–2nd

  • Pediatric–3rd

  • Nursing service administration–3rd

  • Gerontological/geriatric–6th

  • Nursing-midwifery–7th

Other top 10 UW graduate programs and academic specialties freshly ranked this year are:

  • Public Health–4th

The rankings are established using such measures as statistical analysis of selected academic attributes and surveys of deans and senior faculty at accredited schools in each discipline.
