UW Medical Center moves Dermatology and Dentistry Centers to Roosevelt

UW Medical Center’s Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, General Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centers have moved into spacious new quarters at UWMC-Roosevelt.

In addition to beautiful views of the city, the new clinics feature state-of-the-art treatment facilities for patients, easy access and underground parking.

The clinics are located on the fourth floor of the Roosevelt I (4225) building. The Dermatology Center began seeing patients in its new space on March 17; the dental clinics on March 25. An open house for faculty and staff will be held on Friday, April 4, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

“This move represents an opportunity for us to greatly expand our service to partners in UW Medicine and the medical community in general,” said Dr. John Olerud, professor of medicine and head of the Division of Dermatology.

The Dermatology Center sees 15,000 patients a year, but patients have frequently had to wait six to eight weeks for an appointment.

“With the move to Roosevelt, we anticipate increasing our capacity to see patients by a third right away and by even more in the future,” Olerud said.

Joining UWMC as medical director of the clinic will be Dr. Sandy Barnes, clinical assistant professor of dermatology, formerly of the Polyclinic in Seattle.

The new Dermatology Center has 11 exam rooms and two procedure rooms on the medical dermatology side, and four exam and six procedure rooms on the dermatologic surgery side, said Deb Cramer, clinic manager. There is also space for phototherapy, a conference room, staff lounge, and staff, faculty and resident work areas.

The Dermatologic Surgery Center offers skin cancer surgery, emphasizing the specialized technique of Mohs surgery for more difficult skin cancers. The clinic also features lasers for hair removal and for vascular lesions, and hair transplantation.

“The new facility provides us a much more comfortable environment in which to provide our services with much easier access and parking in a friendly outpatient environment,” said Dr. Dan Berg, director of dermatologic surgery at UW Medical Center.

Dr. Claire Haycox is returning to UWMC to resume her specialty hair loss clinic in the new Dermatology Center as well, Berg said.

The Dermatology Center can be reached at 598-4067; the Dermatologic Surgery Center at 598-6647.

Dentistry

On the other side of the fourth floor is the General Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center. The new location offers double the space of the current clinic adjacent to the emergency room.

The clinic will have 15 exam rooms, including four dedicated to oral surgery and two exclusively for dental hygienists, said Judy Stead, clinic manager.

The clinic offers general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, restorative and implant dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery and dental hygiene services.

“Our mission is to work in partnership with our patients on an individualized basis to understand their needs,” said Dr. Bob Nieman, director of the clinic, “and create a personalized treatment program that delivers the best possible results. We encourage staff and faculty to consider us for their dental care.”

Dr. John Evans, clinical assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, said the new space is better equipped than most outpatient, private oral and maxillofacial surgery offices in the community.

“The new clinic will allow the oral and maxillofacial service, for the first time, access to dedicated, full-time clinic space,” Evans said. “Further, the increased clinic space will allow our faculty to provide care, five days a week, to patients in need of more routine care such as wisdom tooth extractions and dental implants.

“In conjunction with the rest of the specialists in the Dental Care Center, we will be able to offer state-of-the-art care for most any maxillofacial or oral problem for patients from throughout the region.”
