Annual UW astronomy open house to feature astronaut ‘Pinky’ Nelson

  • WHAT: University of Washington astronomy department’s annual open house

  • WHO: UW astronomers and astrophysicists and space shuttle astronaut George “Pinky” Nelson

  • WHEN: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10

  • WHERE: Physics-Astronomy Building, 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Pacific Street on the UW’s Seattle campus

    DETAILS: The event, free and open to the public, will have a variety of activities, from workshops on making comets to planetarium shows and telescope viewing of the moon. In addition, moon rocks will be on display and scientists will discuss lunar formation theory.

    Nelson, who became an astronaut shortly after earning a doctoral degree in astronomy at the UW, flew three shuttle missions, including the first one following the 1986 Challenger disaster. He is a former UW associate astronomy professor and assistant provost and is now director of the Science, Math and Technology Education Program at Western Washington University in Bellingham. At the open house he will discuss various aspects of astronomy and space exploration.
