Pediatric Dentistry chair begins work

Dr. Joel Berg began work as the new chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry Feb. 1.

“ I am confident that Dr. Berg will ensure that the University of Washington School of Dentistry is a leader in pediatric oral health care,” School of Dentistry Dean Martha Somerman said. “He has demonstrated dynamic leadership and has the capability to establish a comprehensive program in pediatric dentistry that combines excellence in clinical training with a strong program of research.”

Berg is leaving a position as vice president of clinical affairs at Philips Oral Healthcare to return to academic work. At Philips Oral Healthcare, Berg has overseen a team of clinical researchers and scientists, while also managing the organization’s professional relations efforts.

Berg received his D.D.S. degree and certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He also received his Master of Science degree from the Graduate College of the University of Iowa. Berg is a board-certified pediatric dentist, president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation (AAPD), and a member of the Advisory Council for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He is a fellow in the American College of Dentists and in the International College of Dentists.

Berg began his academic career at the University of Texas in Houston in 1985, and became associate professor with tenure in 1989. He was director of the postgraduate/residency program in pediatric dentistry in Houston from 1989 through 1995.

Dr. Peter K. Domoto, the former chair, retired last summer after heading the department for 26 years. Dr. Douglas S. Ramsay served as acting chair in the interim.
