Penn sociologist gives Stice Memorial Lecture

University of Pennsylvania sociologist Frank Furstenberg will explore the problems and misconceptions associated with teenage childbearing at the 34th Earl and Edna Stice Memorial Lecture in Social Science.

Furstenberg’s talk, Teenage Childbearing: The Making and Misshaping of a Social Problem, which is sponsored by the sociology department, will begin at 4:30 p.m. March 8 in 110 Kane. The lecture is open at no cost to faculty, staff and students, as well as the general public.

In his talk, Furstenberg will explore the history of teenage childbearing, why it became a public issue and how it has often been misconstrued. He also will look at the social consequences of early childbearing on mothers and their offspring, drawing on his 30-year study of teen mothers and their children.
