Turner Construction named general contractor construction manager of Harborview’s bond project

Seattle — Turner Construction has been named the General Contractor Construction Manager (GCCM) of the King County/Harborview Medical Center bond project. As the primary contractor, Turner will implement construction of the project that includes earthquake stabilization of Harborview and the addition of 50 critical beds. The project also includes removing buildings that would be unsafe in a major earthquake and developing replacement buildings to house critical medical center functions. In September 2000, King County voters passed a $193 million bond to fund the project.

The Turner Corporation, through Turner Construction Company and other construction subsidiaries, is the leading general builder in the U.S., ranking first or second in the major segments of the building construction field. Modern Healthcare magazine has ranked Turner the number one healthcare builder in the United States for almost 20 years.

Locally, Turner Construction recently completed the Seahawks Stadium and Exhibition Center and the renovation of Suzzallo Library at the University of Washington. Turner is currently completing the Waterfront Marriott, as well as the fourth project for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center ? the Public Health Sciences Building. Other recent Turner projects include the award winning Rosen Building, R&D Magazines Lab of the Year, and the seismic renovation of the Starbucks Building. The architectural firm of NBBJ was selected as the architect to lead the design for the project. Harborview is owned by King County, managed by the University of Washington and serves patients from Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. As the region’s only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center, Harborview also plays a critical role in coordinating medical care and response throughout King County in the event of a major disaster.
