Shortell to speak on managing chronic illness
Dr. Stephen Shortell, a former chair of the UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine’s Department of Health Services and founding director of the UW Center for Health Services Research, will be on campus for a presentation on Friday, Jan. 24.
He will speak on “Managing Chronic Illness: We Know Better, Why Don’t We Do Better?” from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24, in room T-733 of the Health Sciences Center. The presentation, sponsored by the UW School of Public Health, is open to everyone.
Shortell is now dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Blue Cross of California distinguished professor of health policy and management. He also holds appointments in the Haas School of Business and the Department of Sociology at UC Berkeley, and at the Institute for Health Policy Research, UC San Francisco.
As a leading health-care scholar, Shortell has been the recipient of many awards, including the Baxter-Allegiance Prize for his contributions to health services research, the Gold Medal Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Association for Health Services Research. He is a co-author of the recent book, Remaking Health Care in America: The Evolution of Organized Delivery Systems.
Shortell is a member of the Institute of Medicine and has been president of the Association for Health Services Research. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. in behavioral sciences from the University of Chicago.
He is currently conducting research on evaluating quality improvement initiatives and on implementing evidence-based medicine practices in physician organizations.
