Martin Luther King Jr. tributes planned at Health Sciences Lobby and at Harborview

Two programs on Thursday, Jan. 16, will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday marking his birth is Monday, Jan. 20.

At the Health Sciences Building, the Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Health Sciences Lobby. The program, open to everyone, is jointly sponsored by Health Sciences Administration and UW Medical Center.

The theme this year is “Bridging Cultures, Celebrating Differences.” Pramila Jayapal, activist, writer and director of the Hate Free Zone Campaign of Washington, will be the keynote speaker. Anthony Kelley, a UW student who has won the UW’s Carlson Leadership Award, a Mary Gates Scholarship, and is a member of the 2002 American Football Coaches’ All Good-Works Team, will be the student speaker.

The Eckstein Middle School Senior Jazz Band will play, and “Hands for a Bridge” will be performed by a Roosevelt High School student group. As in previous years, artwork will be displayed from several student groups, including those from the Hutch School, Summit K-12 School, and the Center on Human Development and Disability.

Awards for community service will be presented to representatives from the health sciences schools and medical centers, and the Health Sciences Center’s Distinguished Service Award will be given. For more information on the program, contact Health Sciences News and Community Relations, 543-3620.

At Harborview Medical Center, the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will be from 2 to 4 p.m., also on Jan. 16, in the cafeteria.

Longtime KIRO TV reporter Debra Horne will return as the mistress of ceremonies for the program, called “Reflect and Rejoice.” Speakers will include King County Executive Ron Sims.

The Apostles, a Seattle-based gospel group, will perform, as will a young group from Harborview’s Cottage School. The event is sponsored by the Harborview Minority Affairs Council and Harborview Administration. Contact Harborview Community Relations at 731-3041 for more information.
