Volunteers needed for ‘U District Fix-up’

Volunteers are needed for a “U District Fix-up” for the holidays. On Saturday, Dec. 14, The Ave will be opened — temporarily — to traffic, and community members are planning to decorate the area.

The fix-up is designed to help merchants, who have been struggling with everything from crime to tough economic times to stores around them closing.

“Those of us who have worked with the local community know that these are very special merchants,” said Rick Eberhardt, coordinator of Partnership for Youth, an organization affiliated with the UW that works with homeless youth. “Many contribute to social services in the community, a number of them volunteer or help financially. Now we have a chance to support them in return.”

Volunteers should report to the U Heights Center for the Community, at 50th and the Ave, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jobs include making wreaths, swags and other decorations and placing them in the area.
