Women’s choir plans holiday concert for Suzzallo Reading Room

Imagine a holiday concert held, not in an auditorium, but in Suzzallo’s beloved Reading Room. That’s exactly what’s planned for Saturday, Dec. 7, and it’s even free. You can pick up the required tickets beginning Nov. 1 at the Allen Library information desk — limit two per person.

The concert will be performed by the Medieval Women’s Choir, directed by Margriet Tindemans. The program will feature sacred and secular songs for the Christmas season as well as instrumental combinations on vielles, (Medieval viols) harp and percussion. Presented by the Friends of the University Libraries, the concert is part of festivities commemorating the 75th anniversary of Suzzallo Library and completion of Suzzallo renovations.

The Medieval Women’s Choir promotes and performs medieval vocal music, exploring its history, language and message. Established in 1990, the choir has performed at concerts and educational programs throughout the Seattle area. Membership is open to all women from the greater Seattle area with an interest in medieval music.

Director Margriet Tindemans was formerly Artist in Residence at the UW School of Music. She is internationally known for her performances on early stringed instruments, including the medieval fiddle and rebec, Renaissance and baroque viola, viola da gamba, lira da braccio, gittern, harp, and psaltery.

Tindemans was a founding member of Sequentia and of the Huelgas Ensemble of Belgium. She regularly performs and records as a soloist, with Medieval Strings (which she directs), and with The King’s Noyse. She also appears frequently with leading early music ensembles such as the Newberry Consort, the Folger Consort, the Harp Consort, and Theatre of Voices.
