Leader in search for extraterrestrial life to speak at UW

** WHAT: A free, public lecture on the search for extraterrestrial life

** WHO: Seth Shostak, a leading astrobiologist with the SETI Institute

** WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28

** WHERE: Kane Hall, Room 220, University of Washington campus

DETAILS: Shostak is a senior astronomer at the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in Mountain View, Calif. The institute was begun in 1984 to explore, understand and explain the origin and nature of life in the universe and search for signs of other intelligent life. Shostak is involved in the institute’s outreach activities — editing its newsletter, overseeing its Web site, writing books and magazine articles and giving talks about SETI. Before joining the institute, he did research on galaxies using radio telescopes at observatories and universities in the United States and Europe. The UW’s graduate program in astrobiology is sponsoring Shostak’s lecture.
