MBA MASTER: Master’s in business administration students voted Ali Tarhouni, senior lecturer in business economics, as their favorite teacher — really. Tarhouni received not one but two of the UW Business School’s annual distinguished instruction awards voted on by MBA students. They are the Charles E. Summer Memorial Teaching Award and the PACCAR Award for Excellence in Teaching. Tarhouni has taught in the business school since 1985. He will receive a total of $27,000 in stipends from PACCAR Inc., the Renton-based truck manufacturer and from the memorial fund made in Summer’s honor. Summer taught at UW for 20 years and is best remembered for generously mentoring his students.
TOPS IN DESIGN: UW Tacoma’s student-produced literary magazine, Tahoma West, has won an award for undergraduate publication design for the second year in a row. The award comes from the Associated Writing Programs, a professional organization for writers and academic writing programs that spans the United States and Canada. The faculty adviser to the magazine is John Peterson.
INTERNET2 ON THE WEB: Interested in the UW’s involvement in high performance networks and applications? Now there’s a Web site to provide comprehensive information about it. The site, www.washington.edu/eplt/i2/, has information about the high-speed Internet, advanced applications that are under development at the UW and elsewhere, the role on the campus of Internet2, and a series of frequently asked questions that help clarify current issues and future developments. The Web site is being maintained by Educational Partnerships and Learning Technologies.
CYCLISTS SOAR: In June the UW’s Transportation Office sponsored a bike challenge for University teams and individuals, and lots of people rose to the challenge. The HPV Research Group team (Alison Starling, Tiffany Harris, Akhila Balasubramanian and Stephen Hawes) won a $100 Commuter Bonus Plus Voucher for recruiting the most new riders (3). The MAT A team (Tony Hazbu, Doug LaCount, Victoria Brown-Kennerly and Chandra Tucker ) won the same prize for the highest number of trips (45). Another $100 voucher went to the Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle team (Kelly Grant, Michael Taylor, Susan Dandridge and Laura Swaim) for the highest number of miles ridden (916). Mitchell Elend picked up a $50 voucher as the individual winner (10 trips, 50 miles). An additional 67 people won $10 vouchers for completing eight trips by bicycle during the month.
