Prostate Cancer Conference July 12
The UW School of Medicine, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society and Oregon Health & Science University, has organized a one-day prostate cancer conference open to the public on Friday, July 12, in Kane Hall on campus.
The conference is intended for men with prostate cancer, their family members, people at high risk for the disease, and other interested members of the public. The program will include an update on treatment of localized prostate cancer, medical management of advanced prostate cancer, and information on prostate cancer family studies.
Dr. Celestia Higano, UW associate professor of medicine and urology, is the course chair. Visiting faculty are Dr. Tomasz Beer, assistant professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University; Dr. Mark Garzotto, asssitant professor of urology at OHSU and director of urologic oncology research at the Portland VA Medical Center, and Mark Moyad, director of complementary/preventive medicine at the University of Michigan’s Department of Urologic Oncology. Several faculty members from the UW and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, including physicians who practice at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, will also make presentations.
The morning session will include a presentation on American Cancer Society resources for prostate cancer patients and their families, as well as two simultaneous sessions on localized prostate cancer and advanced metastatic cancer. Each of these sessions will have a question-and-answer period.
A special workshop to cover concerns and issues for spouses will begin at 11:30 a.m. Afternoon presentations will focus on current and future research, including genetic factors, family studies and clinical research. Moyad, a popular speaker on nutrition and complementary approaches, will speak at 3 p.m.

The registration fee for the conference at the UW is $35, which includes a continental breakfast, box lunch and course materials.
