VALOROUS VOICE: Sutapa Basu, director of the Women’s Center, was honored last week with the 2002 Asian Pacific American Community Voice Award sponsored by Seattle’s International Examiner. The award honors those who have given generously of their time and resources for the betterment of the Asian American community as well as the larger community in the Pacific Northwest. Basu was honored for her work at the Women’s Center, which provides services to more than 13,000 people annually, and for her research on the human trafficking industry, in which mostly women and children are bought and sold for the purposes of prostitution, domestic slavery, and sweatshop labor. The International Examiner is the oldest and largest English-language Asian American newspaper in the Northwest.
