Craig Hogan named UW vice provost for research
Craig Hogan, the divisional dean of sciences in the University of Washington’s College of Arts and Sciences, has been named the university’s vice provost for research.
He succeeds Alvin Kwiram, who has returned to the chemistry department faculty and has been named emeritus vice provost.
Hogan is a professor of physics and astronomy, and was astronomy chairman from 1995 until his appointment as divisional dean last July.
His appointment as vice provost for research took effect Wednesday, but still must be approved by the UW Board of Regents. In the post, he will oversee the advocacy and funding for scientific research throughout the university. Currently, the UW is the leading public U.S. university in receiving federal research grants and contracts, more than $550 million last fiscal year.
Hogan earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1976 and his doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 1980. He came to the UW in 1990. His research interests are astrophysical cosmology and the evolution and structure of the universe. He is the author of a primer on cosmology called “The Little Book of the Big Bang.”
