MEDIA ADVISORY: With Peace Corps popularity soaring, volunteers to gather at UW
WHAT
Peace Corps Day offers interview/photo opportunities with 200-300 returned Peace Corps volunteers and people interested in joining the Peace Corps. Also taking part will be students preparing for overseas service while earning degrees through the Peace Corps Master’s International (PCMI) program — the only program of its kind on the West Coast — at the UW’s Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs.
WHEN
Friday, March 1, 6-8 p.m. Brief speaker’s program at 6:30 p.m. includes the presentation of a leadership award to 1960s Peace Corps volunteer James R. Moore, who serves as a mentor to students preparing for Peace Corps service. The rest of the event is an informal reception that features information on the Peace Corps plus displays and foods from around the world.
WHERE
Parrington Hall, 3rd floor Forum, UW campus.
WHY
Peace Corps application requests locally and nationally have jumped by 40 percent and visits to its Web site by 60 percent since President Bush promised in last month’s State of the Union address to fight terrorism at home with more volunteers abroad.
