FABULOUS FURNITURE: Would you like to see Suzzallo’s Reading Room returned to its former glory when it reopens late this summer? Well, you may be able to help. Assistant Director of Libraries Paula Walker explains that when the library opened in 1927, the Reading Room was furnished with long (18 feet) oak tables and oak study chairs. However, over the years, some of these tables were replaced by other types of study furniture and the originals were given to departments throughout campus.

Now the Libraries would like to restore the Reading Room as closely as possible to its original appearance, so they’re looking for departments that have tables or chairs that look like those in the accompanying photograph. If your department has such furniture, and if you are willing to part with it so that it can be returned to the Suzzallo Reading Room, please contact Walker, at pwalker@washington.edu or call 206-616-8513.

The award is from R1edu, a partnership of the 34 top U.S. research universities involved in online education. Notkin helped secure two major federal grants to develop online programs at the UW. He was the co-principal investigator for a $1.4 million grant from the Learning Anywhere Anytime Partnership at the U.S. Department of Education. That grant has developed four online certificate programs for Internet professionals in partnership with Prentice-Hall/Pearson, the Public Broadcasting Corporation and the World Organization of Webmasters. He also helped secure a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop an online Bachelor of Science in Computing and Software Systems.
