Open House 2002: Planning well under way for event in late April

Exhibitors are signing up to reserve space for the 2002 Health Sciences Open House, the honorary chair has been named and a theme has been chosen.

The Open House, which draws thousands of visitors to the UW Health Sciences Center, will be Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27. Hours on Friday will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to everyone. Because many area high school groups visit on Friday, families are encouraged to attend on Saturday.

The theme will be “eXtraordinary health eXperience,” with an X-chromosome-shaped graphic containing the names of many of the disicplines that will be represented in the exhibits.

New this year will be a Saturday program of lectures and science-related movies, in addition to the exhibits, said Jane Courage, Open House coordinator. Courage works in Health Sciences/Medical Affairs News and Community Relations and can be reached at 543-1734 or by e-mail at jcourage@u.washington.edu.

Dr. Dana Hammer, director of the Bracken Pharmaceutical Care Learning Center and the Community Pharmacy Residency Program in the School of Pharmacy, is the 2002 Open House honorary chair.

Hammer, a new faculty member this year, said that she was excited to be involved with this major outreach event. A community pharmacist for a few years before she returned to school to earn a Ph.D. degree at Purdue University, she enjoys working with the public and promoting health-related careers.

“I’m hoping we”ll be able to get more of our students involved this year,” she said. “It can be an important experience for our students and I think they will relate well with the visitors, especially high school students. In addition to particular exhibits, the professional students can talk about career preparation and what’s needed to get into health sciences schools.”

And visitors won’t be the only ones learning something at the Open House. “As someone who’s new here at the UW,” Hammer said, “I’m really looking forward to learning more myself about many of the programs and research projects in the other health sciences schools.” She’ll be an enthusiastic participant as well as an honorary chair.

Applications for exhibit space are due Monday, Feb. 11. Application materials have been mailed to previous exhibitors and many departments, but if you want to be an exhibitor and don’t have one, just call Jane Courage, the coordinator, at 543-1734. Exhibit areas will be in several wings of the building and exhibit locations will be assigned later. All exhibitors need to be affiliated with the UW.
