Cosmetic Surgery Center opens: Refractive surgery also moves to UWMC-Roosevelt building with easy access

UW Medical Center-Roosevelt has opened three significant new areas on the second floor this month — the Cosmetic Surgery Center, Refractive Surgery Center and Ambulatory Surgery Center. The UWMC-Roosevelt building is at 4245 Roosevelt Way N.E. and houses several of the medical center’s outpatient services.
The new Cosmetic Surgery Center will combine the services of dermatologic surgery, otolaryngology/facial plastics, and eye surgery in one place, said Deb Cramer, manager.
“The new center will be a great convenience for our patients,” Cramer said.
The Cosmetic Surgery medical team includes Dr. Dan Berg of dermatologic surgery, Dr. Sam Naficy of otolaryngology/facial plastics and Dr. Bryan Sires of ophthalmology/oculoplastics. Sires is medical director of the Cosmetic Surgery Center.
The Refractive Surgery medical team includes Drs. Steven Wilson, JeeHee Kim and Devin Harrison. The staff includes Becki Swearingen, Ardith Murphy and Jane Dickinson.
The Cosmetic Surgery Center staff includes nurse Cassie Conover, medical assistant Barbara Scott, and patient services representatives Michelle Kreeft and Negar Rahimi.
The Cosmetic Surgery Center has three dedicated exam rooms. Refractive Surgery will have five eye exam rooms, and the two clinics will share two additional rooms. There will be procedure rooms for both refractive eye surgery and cosmetic surgery. Some cosmetic surgeries will be performed in the new ambulatory surgery operating rooms.
“We anticipate about 1,100 visits the first six months,” Cramer said.
The Cosmetic Surgery Center will offer many facial procedures, including injectable collagen or botox to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and scars; eyelid surgery, facelifts, necklifts and nose surgery, laser procedures and hair replacement, and liposuction.
The Refractive Surgery Center has grown steadily since its opening three years ago at UWMC, and volumes should expand further with the move to larger quarters at UWMC-Roosevelt. The center provides a full range of state-of-the-art vision correction services for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Cramer moved to her new position as manager of the Cosmetic Surgery and Refractive Surgery Center after two years as manager of Campus Health Services. During her 15 years at UWMC, she has also worked in the Pre-Surgery clinic, the Operating Room and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
“This is a wonderful challenge for me, taking something and starting from the beginning,” said Cramer, who will also manage the Dermatology Center when it moves to a building adjacent to UWMC-Roosevelt later this year.

Also located on the second floor at UWMC-Roosevelt is the new Ambulatory Surgery Center, featuring two operating rooms.
“These two ORs give us a preview of what we can anticipate when the Surgery Pavilion opens,” said Renae Burchiel Battié, perioperative service line manager for Surgical Services. “It’s perfect for a outpatient clinic setting like Roosevelt.”
The two ORs will have days blocked out for eye and cosmetic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology surgery, plastic surgery and gynecological surgery. Dr. Peter Buckley is the medical director.
The new operating area includes a six-bed recovery unit and will have a staff of nine. The admissions area will open at 6 a.m., with surgeries scheduled between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
“Everyone has been tremendously supportive of this at Roosevelt,” Battié said. “Any time you get to create a new unit, it’s fun to see it coming together.”
