Nominations sought for diversity award

Applications and nominations for the 2002 Jeff and Susan Brotman Diversity Award are now being accepted, President Richard L. McCormick has announced. The award is intended to recognize and reward outstanding UW programs that advance the diversity of the University community.

“There are many ways to promote diversity – through recruitment, outreach, academic support, and student activities, to name a few,” McCormick said. “Programs offering these kinds of support are located throughout campus. By recognizing the exemplary programs and providing a monetary award to the winner, we hope to encourage interest and support for these University programs.”

The award carries a prize of $35,000, generously funded by Regent Jeff Brotman and his wife, Susan. The money is to be used to enhance the effectiveness of the winning program.

All members of the University community may submit nominations. Nominations should consist of a brief description of the program (no more than one to two typewritten pages), including specific information about its effectiveness in increasing diversity. The nominations should be submitted to Eric Godfrey, chair of the Jeff and Susan Brotman Diversity Award Committee. That committee will choose the five most creative and innovative submissions from which to request more detailed descriptions (no more than five typewritten pages). The Diversity Award Committee will choose two programs from these five submissions to forward to McCormick for a final decision.

The deadline for submission is March 1. Nominations should be sent to Godfrey, assistant vice president for scholarships and student support, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, 442 Gerberding, Box 35120. The winner will be announced during spring quarter.

The Jeff and Susan Brotman Diversity Award Committee consists of four members from the Office of Minority Affairs Student Advisory Board, one member from the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, one member from the Associated Students of the University of Washington, one UW faculty member, and one UW administrator.
