Martin Luther King Jr. Tributes

Two programs, both open to the public, will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. next week. The holiday marking his birth is Monday, Jan. 21.


On Thursday, Jan. 17, a Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute with the theme “Moving Forward with Dignity, Discipline and Unity” will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Health Sciences Lobby of the UW Health Sciences Center. This event is sponsored by Health Sciences Administration and UW Medical Center.


Dr. Lois Price Spratlen, UW ombudsman, will be the keynote speaker. Ekene Amaefule, a student in the School of Nursing master’s degree program, will be the student speaker.


Eckstein Middle School Senior Jazz Band is scheduled to perform and Frank Byrdwell will lead group singing. Renee Albert, a member of the planning committee, will be the MC and will introduce Kathleen Sellick, executive director of UW Medical Center, who will welcome the audience. Artwork from several elementary school programs will be on display.


The program will include announcement and presentation of the Distinguished Service Award and presentation of Community Service Awards to members of the UW community nominated by each health sciences school and UWMC.


On Friday, Jan. 18, Harborview Medical Center celebrates King’s legacy from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Harborview Cafeteria at 325 9th Ave.


KIRO TV reporter Deborah Horne will be the mistress of ceremonies for the program, “Hopes and Dreams,” which features two hours of music, speakers and celebration.


Speakers scheduled for the event are Ron Sims, King County executive; Rabbi Shoshanah Devorah, who works with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance; the Rev. Leslie David Braxton of Mt. Zion Baptist church, and Jamal Rahman of the Interfaith Community Church.


Entertainment will include the Apostles, a Seattle Gospel group, and the Beacon Hill Elementary School Choir.


The HMC event is sponsored by Harborview Minority Affairs Council and Harborview Administration.
