Harborview Medical Center event honors Martin Luther King Jr. in speech, song and celebration

Harborview Medical Center will celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with speech, song, and celebration in its annual event. The community is invited to join in the celebration on Friday, Jan. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Harborview Cafeteria at 325 9th Avenue.

Long-time KIRO -TV reporter Deborah Horne will be the mistress of ceremonies for the event. The program, entitled “Hopes and Dreams,” will feature two continuous hours of music, speakers and celebration.

Speakers will include Ron Sims, King County Executive; Rabbi Shoshanah Devorah, Spiritual Care, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance; Rev. Dr. Leslie David Braxton, minister, Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Jamal Rahman, minister, Interfaith Community Church.

Entertainment will include the Apostles, a Seattle gospel group well-known for its members rise from life on the streets to earning a living with their gift for song. The Beacon Hill Elementary School Choir will also perform at the event, sharing their spirit of the future with the community.

“We wanted to put together a program that addresses the hopes and dreams of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as they apply to the world today,” said Jeanette West, president, Harborview Minority Affairs Council. “We feel that reflecting the diverse population that we serve is a perfect way to honor the work of this important man in American history.”

The Harborview Medical Center event is sponsored by Harborview Minority Affairs Council and Harborview Administration.
