UW profs named AAAS Fellows

Three UW professors are among 288 scientists to be awarded the distinction of Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, AAAS announced last week. Bruce Balick, Ed Lazowska and Shahid Naeem were cited for “their efforts toward advancing science or fostering applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.”

Balick, astronomy professor and department chairman, joined the UW faculty in 1975. He is a native of Washington, D.C., and received his doctorate at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. His research focuses on the late stages of stellar evolution, primarily how mass-flows from unstable dying stars produce strikingly symmetrical high-speed flows away from the stars. Lazowska holds the Bill and Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science and until recently was chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He earned his doctorate from the University of Toronto in 1977 and joined the faculty at the UW the same year. His research involves computer systems – modeling and analysis, design and implementation, and distributed and parallel systems.

Naeem, associate professor of zoology, has been at the UW since 1998. He was born in San Francisco and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. He received his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the consequences of widespread changes in biodiversity. He studies how changes because of extinctions, invasions of exotic species, or changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and nitrogen pollution affect ecosystems and how they function.

Founded in 1848, AAAS represents the world’s largest federation of scientists and works to advance science for human well-being through its projects, programs and publications. With more than 138,000 members and 275 affiliated societies, AAAS conducts many programs in the areas of science policy, science education and international scientific cooperation.
