Vedder assumes leadership of Plastic Surgery Division

Dr. Nicholas Vedder has assumed duties as the new chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and vice chair of the Department of Surgery. He suceeds Dr. Loren Engrav, chief of the division for 23 years. Engrav continues as professor of surgery.

Vedder joined the faculty in 1991 with a joint appointment in surgery and orthopaedics, and was promoted to associate professor in 1995. An expert in reconstructive microsurgery, he maintains an active research laboratory at Harborview Medical Center.

A native of Chicago, Vedder completed his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1981. He first came to the UW as a general surgery resident from 1981 to 1986, and then was a trauma research fellow at the National Institutes of Health for two years. In 1988, he was a plastic surgery resident at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital. He returned to the UW for a one-year fellowship in hand surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics before he joined the faculty.
