MEDIA ADVISORY: UW, USGS scientists plan news conference to dissect quake information

* WHO: Seismologists, geologists and engineers from the University of Washington, the United States Geological Survey and the private sector

* WHAT: A discussion of specific information about Wednesday’s magnitude 6.8 Nisqually earthquake, including results from the strong-motion network; after-effects such as landslides and liquefaction; potential economic impact; current damage; and hazards that might lie ahead

* WHEN: 3 p.m., Friday, March 2, 2001

* WHERE: Johnson Hall, Room 101, University of Washington campus

DETAILS: Scientists and engineers who monitored the earthquake and have been in the field surveying damage and associated anomalies will talk about what they have seen and what hazards might still confront the Puget Sound region.

To reach Johnson Hall, take the Northeast 45th Street exit from Interstate 5 and turn east. Follow 45th to 15th Avenue Northeast. Turn right onto 15th and follow it to Northeast 40th Street. Turn left on 40th and enter the UW campus. Reporters should stop at the gatehouse for a media-parking permit and parking directions. Past the gatehouse, Johnson Hall lies directly ahead beyond the stop sign, on the right at the end of the traffic circle.
