E-business leaders to weigh in on industry’s future

EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: Tom Van Horn of Mercata, scheduled to speak Jan. 11, had to cancel. There will be no lecture that day.

Top e-business executives will gauge the industry’s recent shakeout during a lecture series at the University of Washington Business School.

The free talks presented by the business school’s Program in Entrepreneurship and Innovation will be held at 6:30 p.m. on selected Thursday in the Seafirst Executive Education Center’s Boeing Auditorium on the UW campus.

Many dot-coms turned little or no profit in recent months, forcing them to lay off employees or go out of business — leaving interest in succeeding in e-commerce at an all-time high. “It will be very interesting to see if our speakers feel there still is a way to continue to develop companies in this industry,” says Emer Dooley, event coordinator.

The series is sponsored by the Herbert B. Jones Foundation and the Gray Cary law firm. Scheduled to speak are:

— Jan. 25, Martin Tobias, digital media distribution company LoudEye founder.

— Feb. 8, “The Power of E-Biz” with Jamie Friedman, vice president for Goldman Sachs, and Bill McAleer, managing director for Voyager Capital.

— Feb. 22, John Keister, president of the Internet navigating company InfoSpace, formerly known as Go2Net.
