Recent computer engineering graduate and newly awarded Rhodes scholar Emma Brunskill will be the featured speaker at a gathering to honor the achievements of some of the UW’s top students. President Richard McCormick and Department of Computer Science & Engineering Chair Ed Lazowska will also address the group. The media are invited and Brunskill and her parents, Andrew and Clare Brunskill of Edmonds, will be available for interviews.

Brunskill, 21, was one of 32 Americans selected earlier this month for the prestigious scholarships, which provide for two or three years of study at Oxford University in England. She entered the UW at 15, and has worked on six research projects in the departments of computer science, physics, geophysics and chemistry. She also worked as a summer research student at the European Center for Particle Physics. Brunskill graduated in June with a degree in computer engineering and is pursuing graduate studies at MIT, where she will continue until late spring before heading to England. After two years at Oxford, she plans to return to MIT to complete a doctorate.

Lazowska said Brunskill’s success comes as no surprise.

“Emma has more promise than any other student I have encountered in my 23 years at the University of Washington,” he said. “She is literally the best I have known.”
