UW hosts diversity breakfast Oct. 21

News and Information

About 800 people from the University of Washington and the community are expected to attend the Sixth Annual “Bridging the Gap” Diversity Breakfast, whose theme is “Forging Ahead: Diversity in the 21st Century.” The event will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 21 in the HUB Ballroom.

The purpose of the breakfast is to raise funds for scholarships for economically disadvantaged students and as a demonstration of the unity of the UW community in support of diversity. It is now the largest non-athletic, on-campus alumni event that the UW holds.

The event will include an auction, the presentation of scholarship awards and alumni awards, and a signing ceremony for the UW’s new Diversity Plan.

Guest speaker will be Rudy Crew, executive director of the Institute for K-12 Leadership.

The 2000 Distinguished Alumni Awards will go to: Alfredo Arreguin, a renowned painter and sculptor; Ralph Bayard, the UW senior associate athletic director; Marilyn Bentz, senior lecturer emeritus in anthropology; William H. Gates, chairman of the Board of Regents; and David Okimoto, director of the Atlantic Street Center.

The Dr. Samuel E. Kelly award will go to Constance and Norman B. Rice. Constance Rice is president of CWR, Inc., and former senior vice chancellor of the Seattle Community College District. Norman Rice is former mayor of Seattle and president and CEO of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle.

The diversity breakfast is sponsored by the Multicultural Alumni Program, the UW Alumni Association, the Office of Minority Affairs and the Multicultural Organization of Students Actively Involved in Change.
