Gifts to University of Washington set record
Gifts to the University of Washington in 1999-2000 surged by more than 30% to a record total of $134,038,997. The previous year’s total was $102,925,052.
“One of the elements that is clearly important to the University of Washington’s future is private support. We appreciate the growing numbers of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations who have made a remarkable difference to the University with these private dollars,” said Richard L.McCormick, UW President.
The three largest gifts in the past year were: $20.16 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a broad range of programs including student support, computer science needs, library initiatives, and women’s sports; $5 million gift from Richard and Susan Fade to develop an autism center; and a $5 million gift from Robert and Jean Reid to the School of Nursing.
“Gifts like these exemplify the transformative power of private giving. We’re grateful to all of those who made this a record year for the University,” said Lynn Hogan, interim vice president for development and alumni relations and executive director of medical affairs development.
Private gifts and grants grew to more than $225 million, compared with nearly $211 million in 1998-99. The UW’s fundraising program is one of the strongest in the country. In 1998-1999, the University of Washington ranked eleventh nationally in the amount of private gifts and grants it received and third among public universities.
