UW to launch Technology Management MBA

A new kind of University of Washington MBA will offer rising technology professionals the knowledge and skills to become corporate leaders, Business School Dean Yash Gupta announced today.

The Technology Management MBA, to begin in January in Bellevue, features an 18-month evening and weekend curriculum designed for talented, busy professionals.

“People are moving up in the hierarchy very fast,” Gupta said. “What this program really does is allow them to grow – to become leaders.”

Students will learn how to harness technology to achieve business objectives – how to re-engineer procedures to support the technology, manage the information that technology provides and deal with human issues arising from rapid change.

Many local companies surveyed said they would consider sending their most promising engineers and technology professionals to the program to broaden their knowledge of management. Developing a cadre of leaders is crucial to firms’ success.

“What’s happening is that competitive companies are the ones that have the human capital,” Gupta said. “In other words, leadership counts.”

The 50 students will meet Monday evenings in Bellevue – at a facility provided by U S WEST – and two Saturdays a month at the main UW campus.

The Technology Management MBA is the latest step in Gupta’s campaign to make the UW Business School a technology force to match the region’s prominence in the field. Last month, he announced an e-business concentration for regular, full-time MBA students.
