Make a comet, see the stars at second UW astronomy open house

WHAT: Second annual University of Washington Astronomy Department open house.

WHEN: Saturday, May 13, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

WHERE: Physics-Astronomy Building, A wing, UW campus

DETAILS: There will be a wide range of activities for all ages, including planetarium shows, exhibits, lectures and telescope viewing (weather permitting). All activities are free and open to the public. Hands-on demonstrations include making a star finder and making a comet. There will be continuous live physics demonstrations, and a panel of astronomers will discuss the science in science-fiction movies. The theme of this year’s open house is astrobiology – the search for life away from Earth. Featured speakers are astronomy professor Donald Brownlee and geological sciences professor Peter Ward, who will discuss their book Rare Earth, in which they argue that advanced life could be very rare in the universe.
