U.S. vs. Europe: Forum to air disputes over genetically modified crops, hormone-treated beef and other WTO sticking points
Some of the hottest disputes in world trade will be discussed by U.S. and European trade leaders at a campus forum tomorrow evening, Dec. 1.
The forum, entitled “The United States, the European Union and WTO: Genetically Modified Products, National Sanctions, British Beef, and American Hormones,” will take place from 6:10 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the University of Washington’s Kane Hall 120.
Moderated by respected local public affairs broadcaster Barry Mitzman of KCTS-9, the forum will feature officials from the Clinton administration, European Union and U.S. Chamber of Commerce, plus a UW faculty expert on the human impact of trade rules:
ć Michael Dunn, U.S. undersecretary of agriculture.
ć David Byrne, commissioner of health & consumer protection, European Commission.
ć Willard Workman, vice president, international, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
ć Matthew Sparke, assistant professor of geography, University of Washington.
The panel discussion will be preceded by a briefing on the day’s WTO activities by Isvan Major, Hungarian ambassador to the WTO.
The event is co-sponsored by the Hungarian-American Chamber of Commerce and the European Union Center of the UW’s Jackson School of International Studies.
