Conference addresses implications of global economic conditions for forest products industry

The University of Washington’s College of Forest Resources and Jay Gruenfeld Associates will co-sponsor a conference Dec. 7 and 8 focusing on international markets and trade for forest products with an emphasis on Pacific Rim countries. Jay Gruenfeld Associates, with its expertise in international forest products trade, has assembled more than two dozen speakers who will define current markets, trade barriers, and target opportunities and will gauge the pulse of the world economy as it relates to forest products.

Among those slated to speak are Lynn Michaelis, chief economist with Weyerhaeuser; Jim Douglas, World Bank forests advisor; Colin McKenzie, chief executive of Groome-Poyry – New Zealand; and Elisa Miller, publisher of The Russian Far East Update. Faculty with the UW’s Center for International Trade in Forest Products (CINTRAFOR) and the College of Forest Resources also will participate in the program. Attendees will receive the conference proceedings in early 1999.
