UW announces campus CEO title changes

News and Information

UW President Richard L. McCormick announced today new titles for the chief executive officer of its campuses in Bothell and Tacoma. The titles of the heads of the University of Washington, Bothell and the University of Washington, Tacoma will become “Chancellor and Dean,” recognizing the dual roles these individuals play in campus management and external relations, as well as academic, budgetary and capital matters. The position reports jointly to the President and the Provost of the University.

“Our two relatively new campuses are growing and evolving,” said McCormick. “The campus CEOs have a set of responsibilities quite similar to a dean of a school or college. They also have additional responsibilities, particularly in managing the physical development of their campuses and the relations with their respective communities. The time has come to recognize the increasing complexity of these two university positions, and adding `chancellor’ to the existing title of `dean’ accomplishes this.”

The chancellor and dean of the University of Washington, Tacoma is Vicky Carwein. Carwein came to the UW in 1995, having served as dean of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, College of Health Sciences. UW, Tacoma opened its doors in 1990. The curriculum is designed for upper division (junior and senior) as well as master’s level graduate students, chiefly from the South Puget Sound region. UW, Tacoma moved to its permanent location in Tacoma’s historic downtown warehouse district in Sept. 1997. It currently serves a population of about 800 full time equivalent students

A search is currently underway for Carwein’s counterpart at the University of Washington, Bothell. UWB was established in 1990 to provide upper-division and graduate programs to serve the North Puget Sound region. Ground was broken in late May for UWB’s permanent location at the 127-acre Truly Farm site near the junction of State Route 522 and Interstate 405. The first phase of construction, which will include facilities for Cascadia Community College as well as UWB, is expected to be completed in the fall of 2000. UWB currently serves a population of about 800 full time equivalent students.

“Chancellor” is a title used pervasively throughout American higher education to designate heads of institutions that are part of multi-campus systems. The heads of the nine campuses of the University of California, for example, are called chancellor, as are the campus CEOs at the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin. It is a title used in community college systems as well.
