First ever retrieval of complete “black smokers” from ocean floor reveals one of Earth’s strangest and most enigmatic ecosystems

WHAT: Press briefing to announce results of “black smoker” expedition.


Speakers will include UW President Richard L. McCormick, American Museum of Natural History President Ellen V. Futter, and co-leaders of the expedition John R. Delaney, UW professor of oceanography, and Edmond A. Mathez, chairman of the museum’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.

After the program, journalists will be escorted onto the UW’s Thomas G. Thompson, one of the expedition ships, to view the black smokers and discuss the expedition with scientists, engineers and educators from the United States and Canada.

WHEN: Saturday, July 18, 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: First floor, UW Marine Sciences Building on Portage Bay. Travel to the end of 15th Avenue Northeast, turn left on Boat Street, and pass the traffic gate to park either in the Southwest Campus parking garage (S-1) or along the road that leads to the water. There is no parking on the pier.
