Drug-free depression treatment study looking for Seattle volunteers

Seattle adults seeking a drug-free treatment as an alternative for dealing with depression are needed for a University of Washington study testing two new psychological treatments to deal with the disorder.

People interested in volunteering as subjects for the study must be between 21 and 60 years of age, meet the project’s screening criteria for clinical depression and not be taking anti-depressant medication or be willing to stop taking medication under the supervision of their doctor.

Participants in the study will receive a free diagnostic evaluation and 20 sessions of psychological therapy from experienced therapists with specialized training in the treatment of depression. The major share of the cost of the therapy will be paid by the research project, but individuals will be expect to pay $25 per therapy session.

For more information about the study or to volunteer, call Kohlenberg at 685-7462.

The two therapeutic approaches being tested include one that already has been shown to be effective and a new version that was developed by Robert Kohlenberg, a UW associate professor of psychology, and Mavis Tsai, a Seattle psychologist in private practice and UW clinical instructor in psychology. The study testing these treatment is being funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health.
