1997 Autumn Quarter enrollments at University of Washington

Main Campus Information

The University of Washington’s main campus 1997 Autumn Quarter enrollment is 35,367, including 853 students in the Evening Degree Program instituted in autumn 1990.

Undergraduate enrollment is 25,740 and graduate and professional is 9,627.

Last year’s headcount was 34,368.

New freshmen, those entering the UW directly from high school, total 4,505, up from 4,036 a year ago. This is the largest freshman class in University history (exceeding the previous high of 4,373 in 1965), even though the number of applicants was about the same as last year.

The average grade point for the new class is 3.60, which compares to 3.61 in 1996, and the average Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) score is 1148, an increase from 1141. The average Admission Index for the class, which is derived from a formula that combines grade-point averages and SAT scores, weighting them at 75 percent and 25 percent, respectively, rose from 72 last year to 73.

New transfer students from community and baccalaureate colleges number 2,016.

State residents make up 82.7 percent of the 1997 student body, with 29,262 Washingtonians. There are 1,843 international students enrolled, constituting 5.2 percent of the total student population. Of the 25,740 undergraduates, 22,900, or 89 percent, are Washington residents.

Over half of the students are women, numbering 17,957 or 50.8 percent.

Minority students total 9,560 or 27 percent of the enrollment.

The University’s main campus record enrollment figure is 37,547, set in 1979.

Bothell and Tacoma Information

Enrollments at the Bothell and Tacoma campuses total 2,220, with 1,128 students enrolled at Tacoma and 1,092 enrolled at Bothell. The campuses enroll upper division undergraduate and graduate students.

Women account for more than half of the students at both campuses, with 71.3 percent, or 804 students, at Tacoma and 62.8 percent, or 686 students, at Bothell.

Most of the students enrolled at the Bothell campus (65.4 percent) are from King County, and 27.4 percent are from Snohomish County. The remaining students are from other areas.

Over 57 percent of the Tacoma campus students (57.8 percent) are from Pierce County, 18.5 percent from King County, 11.7 percent from Kitsap County and 6 percent from Thurston County. The remaining students are from other areas.
