“The Face of Breast Cancer” exhibit comes to Seattle during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

“The Face of Breast Cancer: A Photographic Essay,” is coming to the Seattle area, sponsored by University of Washington Medical Center, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Nordstrom.
The exhibit is a special project of the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund to heighten public awareness and serve as a call to action to eradicate breast cancer. It features the photos and stories of 84 women across the nation, from every state and many walks of life, who have died of breast cancer.

The free exhibit will be on display at the Nordstrom Bellevue Square store from Monday, Oct. 13, through Friday, Oct. 24, during store hours. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Also on display will be a “Wall of Hope,” a collage of photos of breast cancer survivors in Washington state, developed by the Seattle chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. A breast cancer information desk will be staffed during store hours.

During the two weeks of the exhibit, talks on breast cancer prevention, detection and risk factors will be given by physicians from UW Medical Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the six area Nordstrom stores.

An opening reception is planned on Sunday evening, Oct. 12, at Nordstrom Bellevue Square. Actress Joely Richardson, from “101 Dalmatians” and the upcoming movie “Under Heaven,” in which she plays a breast cancer patient, will be a guest speaker. Richardson studied for the role at UW Medical Center.

Cost for the reception is $25 including tax. Reservations must be made in advance, by calling (425) 455-5800, ext. 1690. A portion of the proceeds will benefit breast cancer research at the UW and the Hutchinson Center.

“The Face of Breast Cancer” was created with funding from Bristol-Myers Squibb Oncology. For more information, call Marilyn Hayes-Sweeney, UW Health Sciences Outreach Coordinator, at (206) 543-3620.
