UWTV Airs NASA’s Second Shuttle Servicing Mission to the Hubble Space Telescope

News and Information

With today’s successful launch of NASA’s second shuttle servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, UWTV begins airing NASA’s live coverage of this mission from February 11 – 22.

UWTV will preempt regular UWTV programming to bring viewers special live coverage of this mission during the times listed below. UWTV will air the live mission coverage throughout the entire weekend when four space walks are scheduled to occur.

This special coverage is made possible by the Washington Space Grant Consortium which is housed at the University of Washington and provides information about NASA research for teaching and learning to educators across the state. As a part of this educational effort UWTV provides NASA-TV to viewers throughout Washington State, particularly during live missions.

The mission, designated STS-82, is the second in a series of planned servicing missions to the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Following rendezvous with and retrieval of the HST on the third day of the mission, four space walks on four successive days will take place as the astronauts remove and replace various HST components. Work performed on the telescope will significantly upgrade the scientific capabilities of the HST and keep the telescope functioning smoothly until the next scheduled servicing mission in 1999. Discovery’s mission duration is planned for nine days, 22 hours, 47 minutes.

UWTV can be viewed on channel 27 (greater Seattle), channel 18 (Wenatchee Valley), and channel 16 (Spokane, only available on weekends).
