Nebula Orientation
Nebula is a centrally managed support environment for UW administrative employees using networked personal computers. Nebula PCs are configured with a standard suite of software to support office computing needs.
Nebula PCs are connected via the campus network to a mix of hosts that provide a wide array of services, including:
- Workgroup and personal file storage
- Nightly backup
- Network printing
- Email and fax services
- Internet connectivity
- Centrally maintained software updates
Review the complete Nebula website for information about what the Nebula model is, passwords, security, getting help, frequently-asked-questions, standard and optional software, and news.
Network drives
When you successfully login to a Nebula PC, you gain access to networked drives, I:\Groups and H:. The I:\Groups drive is for Groups, and is where you will store all data that you need to share with others in your workgroup. The H: drive is for your Home directory, and is where you will store all data that you do not need to share with anyone else. By default, a Nebula PC will suggest that you save new documents and data in H:\. For guidelines on what files are not appropriate to store on H: or I:, pleaes see the Nebula File Storage Policy.
The I:\Groups & H: drives are backed up nightly. If you accidently delete a file, or if a file is corrupted, you may be able to restore it yourself with the procedures on the "File Restore" page. If not, write to nebula@u to request a backup copy of the file. Please include the file location and name(s), and the date from which you'd like the file restored.
C:drive (or other local drive)
Do not store anything on the C: drive. The C: drive can be used for temporary storage if it does not compete with the space necessary for the operating system and standard software. Files or data stored on the C: drive cannot be restored if lost or corrupted. Do not load software on the Nebula PC without the approval of your supervisor and Nebula-support.
When problems occur with the Nebula PC, we may recommend rebuilding the PC. This returns the PC to its original 'newly-delivered' state and removes any customizations you may have added.
PC-Pine
PC-Pine is standard software on the Nebula PC. Once you are setup with a Nebula account and you login to a Nebula PC, you may use PC-pine for email. Check the Pine website for instructions on how to use this software.
Security
Always log off when leaving your PC unattended. Logging in leaves your email, I:\groups and H: drive access open to whomever comes by.
Do not share your passwords with anyone.
