PC Hardware
Nebula currently is specifying Dell Optiplex systems. This arrangement offers greater flexibility at order time than with previous vendors, which means prices and equipment can be adjusted to individual needs. It also allows our engineers to pull purchase and warranty end dates from the Dell database, so it's easy for us to offer this to our clients upon request. For laptops, we recommend the Dell Latitude line. The models range from an ultra-light (~3 lbs, external CD drive, 12" screen), to a medium (~5 lbs, internal CD drive, 14" screen) to a "desktop replacement" (15" screen). Clients considering purchase of new hardware should consult with their Nebula support person about precise needs and available choices. Information on repairs, for both Dell and non-Dell systems, is found at Warranty Assistance for Nebula Gold Computers. Information on obtaining insurance to protect your systems from loss as a result of accident, theft or natural disaster can be found on the Office of Risk Management's Equipment Insurance page.
The standard configuration we're recommending is an Optiplex GX760, in either a "small form factor" case or a mini-tower, with a flat panel monitor. The small form factor Optiplex case can act as a monitor stand, freeing up space on or under the desk. If you need to add additional components, such as for monitors or peripherals, you may wish to consider the mini-tower. A three-year warranty is standard; a four-year warranty may be purchased for about $65.
It is configured as follows:- Intel Core 2 Duo processor
- Integrated Intel Gigabit ethernet adapter
- Small form factor desktop case or mini-tower
- 2gb DDR2 non-ECC SDRAM (2 DIMMs)
- Dell flat panel monitor
- Integrated video
- 80 GB SATA 7200RPM hard disk
- Dell USB keyboard, no hot keys
- Microsoft USB 2-button optical mouse with scroll wheel
- Integrated Soundblaster-compatible sound
- Internal business audio speaker
- 8X DVD+/-RW Roxio Creator Cyberlink PowerDVD
- Windows Vista (this replaces XP as the Nebula default on May 1, 2009)
- 3- or 4-year next-day onsite warranty (please see this note on warranty)
The figures given above are approximations. Other charges include tax, delivery and installation. For a new computer, a software licensing charge is also added. Please consult with your Nebula support person for more information on pricing.
Many options are available. These include choice of display, alternate mice and keyboards, processor, sound and video upgrades, alternate case designs, and different warrantee lengths. Pricing may vary at time of ordering. Please consult with your Nebula support person for detailed price quotes.
Microsoft Vista
Microsoft Vista will become the default operating system on all new Nebula computers ordered from Dell, on May 1, 2009. We have developed the following hardware specifications for Vista:

- Recommended:
- Regular user: 2GB RAM, 7200 RPM hard drive
- Power user: 4GB RAM, 7200 RPM hard drive
Software
The standard package of Nebula client software includes Microsoft Office and the network client licenses. These licenses are covered under the Microsoft Campus Agreement for all Nebula users. There is no additional charge for them when buying new equipment.
Additional software packages are available within the Nebula environment. Please see the Nebula software packages page or contact Nebula Support at the address below, for more information on availability and procedures for adding software packages.
