Account creation for new Nebula users
A UW NetID is a unique personal identification name for using UW online resources. Once a UW NetID is established, computing support staff can enable other services (such as Nebula) based upon it.
For more detailed information about UW NetID, see http://www.washington.edu/computing/uwnetid/
Typical account setup process
- The initial establishment of a UW NetID happens when someone first becomes affiliated with the University. Users who have not yet established a UW NetID should use a web browser to visit the Get Your UW NetID link on the main Computing and Communications page at www.washington.edu/computing and create one.
- After a UW NetID is set up, the Nebula contact from
the office should send email to
nebula@u.washington.edu and request a new Nebula account and, if desired, an Oracle Calendar account. This email should include:- The new user's first and last names
- The UW NetID
- Appropriate group memberships (or, include the UW NetID of a person with the same network access the new person should have)
- Appropriate email list memberships (if applicable)
- The primary support contact for Nebula will then establish the accounts, set temporary passwords for them, and follow up with any orientation and training needs for the new Nebula user.
It is worth noting that this process also applies to students who are also employees. We can establish new Nebula accounts for students using their existing UW NetID, rather than having to create separate "staff identity" accounts. So, for students who are starting a new job, start with step 2.
Early Email process
In some cases, it may be desirable to establish a UW NetID before a staff member is actually hired and in the payroll database, so they can use computing resources immediately upon starting their job.
In these instances, staff who have New Hire
Coordinator authority can make use of the Early Email
system. This system is described in detail at
http://www.washington.edu/user/hr_payroll/people/ess/eeavailable2.html
Sponsored account process
In some cases, users may need access to Nebula computing resources, but are not in the payroll database and therefore cannot use the UW NetID creation tool.
If this is the case, existing staff can request a sponsored account by using the Supplemental Accounts page.
The current charge for sponsored accounts is $20 per month.Supplemental accounts
Common situations where supplemental accounts are appropriate include a departmental email address, or any activity that either needs to be monitored by more than one person, or which should not be owned by an individual account.
Please visit the Supplemental Accounts page for more information and to request an account.
If you have questions about any of these procedures,
please send email to
nebula@u.washington.edu
