William W. Castonguay Bill was 70 at the time of his death having been born in Iowa and retired from the US Navy before applying for the MEDEX program. He graduated with Class 4 and was one of the first 50 Physician Assistants to be licensed by the state of Washington. His Navy career included tours in Hawaii at Tripler Army Medical Center and Pearl Harbor aboard the destroyer USS EPPERSON where he did independent duty (without benefit of a doctor on board with him) and also was with the Fleet Marines in Vietnam in the northern part of Vietnam. Fortunately he was never wounded. Upon retiring from the Navy he applied to the UW Medex program and was selected from 3000 candidates. He felt that made him a pioneer in the medical field. After graduating from the UW MEDEX program he worked at the Bainbridge Island Medical Center and as a result was the first PA to work on the Island. He lived on Bainbridge with his wife Helen and their two sons, Scott and Mark, until he went to work at Group Health in Renton. Upon retiring from Group Health-Renton, the family moved to Federal Way, and he worked Locums at the Federal Way clinic for about a year until his health no longer permitted him to do so. He enjoyed watching sports on television, playing computer games and traveling with his wife Helen, especially to Alaska, the Caribbean , the Mexican Riviera, and through the Panama Canal all via ocean liner. They did a trip to Australia in 2000 just before the Olympic games and visited Helen's family in various parts. Bill fought COPD and emphysema for 10 years and at the end died at home in Federal Way, as was his wish, with his wife by his side. There will be a family service and inurnment at TAHOMA NATIONAL
CEMETERY on Friday, August 26, 2005. The family asks that memorials be
made to your local chapter of the ASPCA.You may contact the family at HELENC719@AOL.COM. |
