Information on Seattle

needle   If you're from out of the state or region and considering the Seattle training option, you might be wondering where you can turn for information about the city and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Founded in 1869, the City of Seattle is located in the State of Washington on Puget Sound, 113 miles (182 km) from the U.S.-Canadian border. Seattle is a commercial, cultural and advanced technology hub of the US Pacific Northwest and a major port city for trans-Pacific and European trade. Surrounded by mountains and water, the greater Seattle area features picture-perfect views and abundant recreational opportunities year-round.

Greater Seattle excels in livability with a mild climate, affordable housing, a full range of arts, cultural and sporting events, an abundance of shops and restaurants, and easy access to outdoor recreational activities throughout the year. Seattle is also known as a center for state of the art health care. There are 26 general-acute and 4 special purpose hospitals, more than 4,500 beds, and approximately 3,000 physicians. Leading institutions include Swedish Hospital, University of Washington Hospital and School of Medicine, Harborview Medical Center, Providence Hospital, Group Health Cooperative Hospital, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Northwest Hospital, Valley General Hospital, Children's Hospital and the new Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Sources of information you may wish to consider include:

The University of Washington Visitors Information Center is located at 4014 University Way NE. They have a number of brochures and other information to help you acclimate to the area. You can also call them at (206) 543-9198. You can check out the University's own home page, which is full of information for students and prospective students.

The Seattle Times, one of the local daily papers, has its classified ad section online. If you're looking for a place to live, it's a good place to start.

And the good old-fashioned phone number for the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce office is (206) 389-7200. Their Visitor Information office number is (206) 461-5840.
