The University of Washington School of Medicine has finalized the schedule and registration for the 2012 All-WWAMI Academic Retreat for Education (AWARE) faculty development meetings. The AWARE conference, held every other year, brings together WWAMI/UW School of Medicine leadership and faculty from throughout the region to focus on faculty development and improving the education of our medical students. The June 2012 AWARE retreat will take place June 3-5, 2011, in Seattle, Washington, at the University of Washington Health Sciences Building with the following structure:

Sunday, June 3rd – HuBio 1st Year Course Chair annual meetings / Clinical Dept Clerkship annual meetings / WWAMI 40th Anniversary Dinner

Monday, June 4th – Plenary and Workshop Sessions

Tuesday, June 5th – Alternate date for HuBio FirstYear Course Chair/Clinical Dept Clerkship annual meetings

Please visit the AWARE website to provide your registration information, indicate which workshops you plan to attend, what type of lunch you prefer, and whether you will be attending the WWAMI 40th Anniversary Celebration dinner at the Seattle Sheraton hotel on Sunday night.  Please print out a copy of your registration so that you remember which workshops you selected.  For everyone that registers, Eric Tobiason will send out parking and driving information, maps to Health Sciences, and other AWARE details via e-mail at least a week prior to the conference.

The concept for these meetings will be for clinical department course chairs and first-year Seattle course chairs to meet with their WWAMI faculty counterparts on either Sunday afternoon or Tuesday.  The Monday morning session is reserved for centralized plenary sessions and decentralized workshops.  Monday’s lunch will involve topic-based facilitated round table discussions and a chance to network with other WWAMI colleagues.  All of the centralized plenary and workshop sessions will take place in the Health Sciences building on the University of Washington campus.  We will primarily be located at Hogness Auditorium (A-420, Health Sciences) for plenary sessions, the T-5 small group classrooms for workshops, and the I Court Rotunda for lunch.  Attendees should expect to return home Monday evening or Tuesday. Click here for current version of the AWARE schedule.

In conjunction with the AWARE Retreat, Dr. Paul Ramsey, CEO, UW Medicine, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine, University of Washington, invites you to attend the 40th WWAMI Anniversary Celebration Reception and Dinner on Sunday June 3, 2012, at 5:30pm at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Seattle.  Please join us for the culminating WWAMI 40th anniversary event so we can say thank you for 40 years of wonderful partnership.  Dr. Ramsey invites you to listen to keynote speakers reflect on “What WWAMI Means to Me,” reconnect with colleagues and share stories of your WWAMI adventures.  The festivities will start with a reception followed by dinner.  You can register for the dinner through the AWARE website registration webpage.

The June 4 plenary discussion topics this year will be based on an overview of the School’s curriculum renewal process as well as keynote speaker presentations on the use of active learning.  Beyond 2.5 hours of scheduled plenary on Monday morning, we also plan to offer three 1.5-hour workshop sessions with 24 different workshop offerings covering a variety of pre-clinical, clinical and administrative subjects that will hopefully share some best practices and allow for further collaboration and enhancement of your curriculum (comprehensive list and description of workshops). A few of the department meetings have been finalized—if you have questions about the timing of these meeting(s) to schedule your airfare, please work with your UW department point(s) of contact.
