Medical students will be involved in the direct care of pediatric patients, with the supervision of Pediatric Hospitalists, on the Pediatric Unit at Community Medical Center, and Pediatricians, in the Offices. He/she is encouraged to assume responsibilities in independent evaluation, differential diagnoses, diagnostic studies, procedures, theapeutic decisions, and discharge planning for each patient, while maintaining good communication with the supervising physician and primary care provider.
Students will encounter a wide array of diseases and severity of disease from gastroenteritis to respiratory failure. Our medical staff has representatives of many Pediatric Specialties, including: (locally) Cardiology, Neonatology, General Surgery, Rheumatology; (regionally) Genetics, Endocrinology, Neurology. Additionally, Seattle Children’s provides assistance for complex and critically ill patients. The Pediatric Unit is comprised of 4 PICU beds and 8-12 ward beds.
Clinical time will be divided between inpatient and outpatient care. Call includes one full weekend, though taken from home, and one weekday per week. Student attire is expected to be professionally casual.
