August 19: Visiting Professor Lecture. 12:00-1:00pm in Wright Auditorium. “Scaling Up the Care and Treatment of HIV-Infected Children Globally: Lessons from the Field in Romania and Sub-Saharan Africa” presented by Mark Kine, MD, Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine. September 21-25: Intern Retreat. The Chief Residents need your help to work with our senior residents to cover a variety of services, which include General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Medically Complex Children and the Newborn and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the UW. September 28: Visiting Scientist Seminar. 11:45-12:45 in Soundgarden, Bldg 1. “Progress towards treatment of SCID-X1 with self-inactivating lentiviral vectors” presented by Brian Sorrentino, MD, Director, Experimental Hematology; Member, Department of Hematology; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Hosted by David Rawlings, MD and Andrew Scharenbeg, MD.

October 28: Department of Pediatrics Faculty Meeting. 5:30-8:00pm in Wright Auditorium. The topics will be: a presentation of Children’s University Medical Group (our practice plan); A presentation of our CPI staff on how to use a tool called the A3 to do spot improvements using the Toyota system in your areas. November 5: The Lana Staheli Endowed Lecture followed by the Annual Work-Life Balance Symposium. The theme for the day will be “Survive and Thrive: Promoting Resilience and Balance among Pediatric Health Care Professionals”, and will feature guest lecturer, Dan Shapiro, PhD, who is Professor and Chair of the Humanities Department at Penn State College of Medicine. Lisa Cranmer, MD, a 3rd year pediatric resident, was awarded an AAP Resident Research Grant. 

F. Curt Bennett, MD, has been named President-Elect for the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for the 2009-2010 term.  He will become President for the 2011-2012 term. 

Kenneth Schenkman, MD, grant proposal:  Noninvasive clinical monitor for early detection of shock has been selected for an award of $150,000 from the LSDF 2009 Winter Commercialization Grant Competition.

Aaron Olson, MD, grant project: Metabolic Substrate Utilization During c-Myc Induced Cardiac Hypertrophy was awarded $128,979.

Cari McCarty, PhD, Research Associate Professor, received funding for her R-34 grant "Prevention Depression within Salient Adolescent Contexts" 09/09-08/12. 

Luke Hoffman, MD, has been awarded a one-year grant from the Royalty Research Fund, for his project, "Community-level physiologic profiling to identify new therapies for polymicrobial infectious diseases: A pilot study" July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010.

Joyce P. Yi-Frazier, PhD, received funding for her ITHS Small Pilot Grant:  “Personal Risks and Resources of Adolescents with Type 1 diabetes: Correlates with glycemic control, self-care and quality of life” and was also a NIH Loan Repayment Program Recipient.  

Bruder Stapleton, MD was visiting professor at Michigan State University and presented grand rounds on July 16, 2009 at Sparrow Hospital. 

Ed Marcuse, MD, MPH, was elected to the Faculty Senate. He has been appointed the Cabinet of the Chair of the Faculty Senate.

Annie Nguyen-Vermillion, MD, Neonatology Fellow, was selected for the Culture of Safety Hospital Goal Award. This award recognizes staff for being part of the solution by demonstrating accountability through reporting safety-related concerns through eFeedbackNOW and self identifying for follow-up.

Lenna Liu, MD, MPH, received this year’s Odessa Brown Ken Feldman Award for excellent patient care.

The Clinical Training Unit, Center on Human Development and Disability recently received a competitive supplemental award to the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities training grant. The award of $65,000 per year for three years will increase the number of short and long term pediatric audiology trainees. The award will expand didactic content and augment clinical experiences in infant/pediatric audiology available to pediatric residents during their developmental/behavioral pediatrics rotation. The competition was made possible through a contract to the Association of University Centers on Disabilities from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Danny Mallon, MD, 3rd year resident and a chief resident next year had abstract entitled "Hormonal dysregulation in Diencephalic Syndrome: A case with new data" selected for a Clinical Vignette poster presentation at the NASPGHAN Annual Meeting, November 12 - 14, 2009 in National Harbor, MD.

Phoenix Ho, MD, senior fellow in the Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, was featured in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) as the recipient of the 2009 Young Investigator Award (YIA). The title of his award-winning research is “Implications of s-SHIP Expression and SHIP Alterations in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.”
