top I. IMPORTANT DATES

June 23, 2009: Next Faculty Meeting. 5:15-8 PM in Wright Auditorium. The topic of this meeting will be Seattle Children's research resources for clinical and translational research, bench research, quality improvement research; and an update on Department finances. Speakers will be Drs. Bonnie Ramsey, Nino Ramirez, Rita Mangione-Smith, and Erin Allen, MHA. A panel discussion will be part of the program with all available Research Center Directors participating. There will be a social gathering (5:15-5:45 PM) in the Board Room prior to the meeting (5:45-8:00 PM; note earlier start time). A buffet service of hors' d'oeuvres and appetizers will be set up in the foyer of Wright Auditorium. Childcare will be available from 5:00-8:30 PM. Children must be between the ages of 4-10 years. Please email Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu) by June 15 if you will be using this service. She will need the following information: name, age, and number of children, and she will provide further details once childcare has been confirmed.

July 17-18, 2009: Tourette Syndrome medical symposium. Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, will be holding a 1.5-day workshop free of cost on July 17 and 18, on Tourette Syndrome (and behavioral tic management), featuring internationally known Doug Woods, PhD. July 21, 2009: Annual Pediatrics Faculty and Family Picnic, Gas Works Park, 6:00-8:00 PM. Invitations and details forthcoming. Please mark this fun event on your calendar and contact Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu) if you have any questions.

September 21-25 , 2009: SAVE THE DATE – Intern Retreat. The Chief Residents need your help to work with our senior residents to cover a variety of services, which include General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Medically Complex Children and the Newborn and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the UW. November 5, 2009: The Lana Staheli Endowed Lecture followed by the Annual Work-Life Balance Symposium. The theme for the day will be “Survive and Thrive: Promoting Resilience and Balance among Pediatric Health Care Professionals”, and will feature guest lecturer, Dan Shapiro, PhD, who is Professor and Chair of the Humanities Department at Penn State College of Medicine. top III. FACULTY NEWS

Drs. Eileen Klein, Edgar Marcuse, Carol Miao, C. Ronald Scott, Taraneh Shafii and Suzanne Skoda-Smith have been elected to the Faculty Senate for the term 9/16/2009 through 9/15/2011.

David Estroff, COL MC, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Madigan Army Medical Center, is retiring from active duty at Madigan after nearly 10 years. He is planning to work as a civilian provider for the US Army in eastern Bavaria starting later this summer. David was honored with the Legion of Merit medal at his retirement ceremony. He plans to return to the area after a 2-3 year tour in Germany.

Dr. Beth Ebel was appointed to the national AAP Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention by the AAP Board.

Cora Breuner, MD, MPH, was appointed to the national AAP Committee on Adolescence by the AAP Board.

Dr. Allison Eddy was elected to the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Council.

Congratulations to Dr. Joan Roberts for receiving the PICU Fellows’ Mentor Award, and to Dr. John McGuire for receiving the PICU Fellows’ Teaching Award.

Lenna Liu, MD, MPH, was recognized with the Culture of Safety Hospital Goal Award (internal link) This award recognizes staff for being part of the solution by demonstrating accountability through reporting safety-related concerns through eFeedbackNOW and self identifying for follow-up.

Heather C. Mefford, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics has received the 2009 William K Bowes, Jr Award in Medical Genetics from the Harvard Medical School. She will receive the award on June 17 and present Grand Rounds at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Frederick Rivara, MD, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs is being awarded the UW School of Public Health 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award during the School's annual Awards Ceremony and Graduation Celebration on June 12.

The ECMO Center has received the ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support. Their application met and exceeded all requirements set by ELSO and was unanimously approved by the ELSO Award Committee. The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization created the “Excellence in Life Support” award to recognize and acknowledge extraordinary achievement in the following three categories: Excellence in training, education, collaboration, and communication that supports the ELSO guidelines and contributes to a healing environment; Excellence in patient care by using the highest quality measures, processes, and structures based upon evidence; And excellence in promoting the mission, activities, and vision of ELSO. Ours is one of 30 centers internationally who hold this award.
